What Types of PET can be Recycled

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is widely recycled, but not all PET products are equally suitable for recycling.

Main types of PET that can be processed in PET recycling line:

1. Clear/Transparent PET

Best for recycling – High demand due to purity. Common uses: Water bottles, soda bottles, food containers. Recyclability: Easily processed into food-grade rPET.

2. Colored PET (Blue, Green, Other Tints)

Recyclable, but less valuable than clear PET. Challenges: Dyes can limit reuse in clear products; often downcycled into fibers or strapping.

3. PET Food Trays & Clamshells

Recyclable, but often mixed with other plastics. Issues: Thin layers may require specialized sorting.

4. PET from Textiles (Polyester Fiber)

Technically recyclable, but rarely collected via standard systems.

5. Multi-Layer PET (Mixed Materials)

Difficult to recycle conventionally (e.g., PET with aluminum or EVOH layers).

6. PET with Labels, Caps, or Glue

Recyclable after processing (labels/glue removed during washing).

Note: Caps (usually PP or HDPE) must be separated.

Non-Recyclable PET:

1. PVC-contaminated PET (causes degradation in recycling).

2. Biodegradable/PET blends (disrupts recycling streams).

3. Heavily soiled/oily PET (requires intensive cleaning).
